Giant pro-democracy rally in Sri Lanka capital

Giant pro-democracy rally in Sri Lanka capital Pro-democracy_lg

AFP - Tens of thousands of supporters of sacked prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe blocked roads in Sri Lanka's capital on Tuesday, stepping up a showdown with the country's newly appointed leader -- a former strongman accused of grave rights abuses.

Wickremesinghe left his official residence for the first time since Friday to condemn President Maithripala Sirisena for dismissing him and appointing Mahinda Rajapakse, a former president accused of human rights violations and corruption.

Wickremesinghe's party said about 100,000 people flooded the streets, while police sources estimated 25,000 even as scores of buses brought more demonstrators to the biggest rally since the constitutional crisis erupted.

The army of followers chanted "Down With the Rogue PM" as they targeted Rajapakse, who Sirisena has brought back into frontline politics as his prime minister.

Effigies of Sirisena were torn up in a symbolic protest against the president, who has faced international calls to end a suspension of parliament so it can hold a vote on the rival prime ministers.

"We are against the sacking, the people did not vote for Sirisena to act in this manner," Wickremesinghe told supporters from a makeshift stage. "We will resist what the president has done."

Parliament speaker Karu Jayasuriya has warned that the crisis could lead to a "bloodbath" on the streets if the assembly does not hold a vote.

But the rally remained peaceful, watched by more than 2,600 police and special task force commandos.

Behind the scenes, the rivals battled to tempt lawmakers from opposing sides to bolster their numbers if a vote is held.

Rajapakse, 72, gave four legislators from Wickremesinghe's party ministerial portfolios in his cabinet after persuading them to defect on Monday.

Wickremesinghe has in turn convinced two lawmakers from Sirisena's camp to join his United National Party.

Following the defections, Wickremesinghe has 105 MPs in the 225-seat chamber while Rajapakse and Sirisena together have 98.

A majority of the 22 remaining MPs are expected to back Wickremesinghe in any vote but the horse-trading is sure to intensify, observers said.

A deputy minister in Wickremesinghe's administration, Ranjan Ramanayake, accused China of paying for Rajapakse -- who favoured a pro-Beijing policy during his decade-long tenure as president -- to buy legislators.

"I am telling China not to spend their millions to buy MPs in Sri Lanka. They want to buy the country wholesale," he said. - CHINA DENIES INTERFERENCE -

The Chinese embassy in Colombo denied the claims in a statement to AFP.

"Recent allegations about China by MP Ranjan Ramanayake are groundless and irresponsible," the statement said, adding that Beijing follows "the principle of non-interference in other country's internal affairs."

With Sirisena showing no sign of lifting the parliamentary suspension which runs until November 16, Wickremesinghe's finance minister Mangala Samaraweera said the president was trying to buy time to secure votes for Rajapakse.

Speaker Jayasuriya followed up his "bloodbath" warning by officially calling on Sirisena to recall parliament or risk unrest.

"If you do not, we will not be able to stop people taking alternate action to protect their democratic rights," Jayasuriya said in the letter seen by AFP.

Tensions have been heightened by the killing of one activist in the capital on Sunday.

The army has insisted however that it will let politicians solve the crisis.

Sri Lanka's army chief Mahesh Senanayake told AFP the military expected politicians to "constitutionally and legally" end the dispute.

"The army will not get involved," he said, responding to queries on the role of security forces as the constitutional crisis drags on.

"The police are responsible for maintaining law and order and only if they require our assistance, we will help."

Sirisena appointed a 12-member cabinet late Monday, giving the powerful finance portfolio to Rajapakse. Aides said the cabinet would be expanded to 30 members on Tuesday.

Rajapakse -- whose rule was marked by allegations of rights abuses and authoritarianism -- said Monday he was given the job because his predecessor's party "engaged in a quest to sell off valuable state assets and enterprises to foreign companies".

"I was aware that at this moment of national peril, the people expected our leadership and protection," Rajapakse said. "Hence, I accepted the invitation."

It is reported that the majority had come there with the demand for Ranil to step down and hand over the party leadership to Sajith. There had been placards demanding same and Govt is considering to increase Ranil's security in order to safe guard him from Sajith's supporters who were seen vociferously demanding him to step down.

Sri Lanka's AFP correspondent is a shameless Sri Lankan journalist.

1. He says former strong man, MR is accused of corruption and rights abuses. That's true. But What about Ranil Wickramasinghe? Isn't he also accused of massive corruption charges, in a scale that has threatened to de-stabilise SL economy? Isn't he accused of anti-democratically deliberately postponing local elections for years for fear of loosing them and loosing his face amongst the international community? Isn't RW accused of human rights abuses and violations during 87-90 JVP insurrection?  AFP correspondent should first read the definition of Democracy in the Oxford and Cambridge dictionaries.

2. He is trying to drag Army in to the political drama and trying to give ideas to Army top brass that they should intervene and take over as a military leader. If that happens then thereafter he can become more famous and draw even a bigger salary, which is in US Dollars, from his foreign employer.

Britain does not have a written constitution. We do have a written constitution and President Sirisena prorogued parliament in accordance with the powers vested with him in the constitution.
President has clearly explained that to the Diplomatic community at a meeting summoned by him yesterday.
This is not the first time that the parliament had been prorogued by an incumbent President and that too in order to prepare and present the vote on account as explained by Dr.Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe. The majority of the people of Sri Lanka are willing to swear and tell that to Mr.Swire.

2- we really need a strong opposition party. So the party in power go in the right path. we might see a leadership change soon in UNP.

Finally, we have to act cautiously in CSE till the political crisis over Wink

Do not get caught on political shares-JKH/BFN/KAPI etc
Sell with minimum lost or little profit
This is the time to keep cash in the portfolio
If you are a day trader many opportunities will come
16th Nov hopefully everything goes well for Sri lankans and CSE traders lol!
Change in UNP leadership is long overdue.

Ranil became UNP leader in 1994 as  UNP's entire top leadership was assassinated by LTTE. With the loss of strong leaders in the calibre of  Premadasa, Lalith Athulathmudali, Gamini Disanayake and Ranjan Wijeratne slowly and steadily UNP became weaker and weaker over the years, losing election after election.

Now 24 years as UNP leader he has been unable to win a single Presidential election. 2 times in 2009 & 2015 he avoided Presidential election by fielding Common candidates as it was well known that he was not capable of wining.

The golden opportunity to form a UNP govt was at the 2015 August elections with a weaker and comparatively low popular MR. But Ranil Wickramasinghe is such a weak leader he could not lead his UNP to a 113 seat victory even in Aug 2015 elections. He could not win a simple majority to form a govt of UNP

The only election he held after 2015 (long delayed) saw UNP getting only some 20% of votes. In Sri Lanka's history all local govt elections had been won by the governments in power. This is the 1st time ever a Sri Lankan govt in power has lost local govt elections, that too not marginally, but disastrously.

Do we need to predict whether Ranil Wickramasinghe could lead UNP to an election victory at any of the next elections to be held????

Sri Lanka president lifts suspension of parliament

Nov 01, 2018

ECONOMYNEXT - Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena climbed down from his hard line stand and agreed to reopen parliament on Monday in a move that could lead to a vote to resolve the power struggle between two men claiming the premier post.

This follows close-door talks between Sirisena and Speaker Karu Jayasuriya yesterday. Jayasuriya mounted pressure on Sirisena after the Attorney General refused to endorse Sirisena’s sacking of Ranil Wickremesinghe.

The president informed his decision to recall parliament on November 5 while the man he controversially made prime minister, Mahinda Rajapaksa, also told university academics that Sirisena told him of the latest development.

Rajapaksa maintains he has a majority in the 225-member assembly.

Wickremesinghe has refused to accept his sacking and remained in the premier's official residence and demanded that the legislature is recalled for him to prove his majority.

The stance of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) and the Janatha Vimukti Peramuna (JVP) who together have 22 seats could be the king makers.

Both the JVP and the TNA have said they were against what they called the “unconstitutional” power grab. The TNA made it clear to Rajapaksa on Wednesday not to take their neutrality in parliament for granted.

The Speaker had warned that failure to recommence parliament to resolve a nearly week-long impasse could lead to bloodshed after one man was shot dead and two others were wounded in a confrontation  linked to the crisis. (COLOMBO, Nov 1, 2018)
