Over 100 Singaporean and Malaysian Fund Managers have confirmed participation in a road show to be hosted in Singapore and Malaysia by the Colombo Stock Exchange on Tuesday (29) and Wednesday (30).
The promotion at the Ritz Carlton Millennia in Singapore on Tuesday and the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Kuala Lumpur and confirmations were encouraging, CSE Chairman Krishan Balendra said yesterday.
This will be a very good exposure for Sri Lanka’s capital markets, he said. The promotion planned a couple of months ago is intended to showcase Sri Lanka’s post-war growth story and potential, he said.
Central Bank Governor Ajit Nivard Cabraal will make presentations and Balendra will focus on the prospects for capital markets in Sri Lanka in both Singaporean and Malaysia.
The welcome address for the Singapore will be made by Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner there, Mrs. Ferial Ashraff.
Asked whether the timing wasn’t bad, given the current slump in the Colombo market, a participating broker said the event was arranged some months ago.
The two events will be sponsored by the Sri Lankan High Commission in Singapore and CIMB Bank, Malaysia respectively.
One of the two partners of the CIMB Colombo operation is Alex Lovell, who is has a Fund Management company there and is also Deputy Chairman of Union Bank here.
Selected blue chips including John Keells Holdings, Commercial Bank, Sampath Bank, Hatton National Bank, Dialog Telekom and the new kid in the block, People’s Leasing and others will make presentations at both events.
Balendra said that stock market promotions hosted locally in many parts of the country in collaboration with the Securities and Exchange Commission were also resounding successes and created both interest and awareness among the local investors.
Asked what the CSE was doing to arrest the downward trend in the market, he said that ups and downs were a part of markets. The mandate of the CSE was to create the platform for investment.
