Will the Latest Bird flu strain in Hong kong affect local poultry stocks ?

HONG KONG, Dec. 21 (UPI) -- Hong Kong health officials say they ordered the killing of more than 17,000 chickens after a carcass infected with bird flu was discovered at a poultry market.

The carcass was found to have a "highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza virus," York Chow, Hong Kong's secretary for food and health, said in a statement announcing the cull.

Hong Kong has raised the territory's bird flu alert to "serious," and increased monitoring for influenza cases at hospitals, The New York Times reported Wednesday.

The sale and import of live poultry will be suspended for 21 days, Chow said, while officials attempt to determine if the carcass was imported or obtained from a local source.

"I understand that it will cause inconvenience to the public, and the poultry trade will also encounter losses," Chow said. "However, to safeguard public health, we need to adopt decisive and effective measures to prevent and control the spread of the virus."

Hong Kong was the site of the world's first major outbreak of avian flu among humans. Six people died in 1997.

The Latest on the Bird flu case.Looks like an isolated case, So, may be you wanna delay Exit.

Dec. 22 (Bloomberg) -- Hong Kong culled 19,451 birds and banned the sale and import of live poultry until Jan. 12 after the deadly H5N1 bird flu virus was found in a chicken carcass at a wholesale market.

The 30 chicken farms in Hong Kong were tested, with all samples free of avian influenza, the city government said in a press release yesterday evening. The Agricultural, Fisheries and Conservation Department will conduct further testing.

Hong Kong takes a tough line on the highly pathogenic strain of flu virus, first recorded in humans in the city in 1997 and which has since spread through Asia, Europe and Africa, resulting in the deaths of tens of millions of birds and killing more than half of the people that caught it. The city of 7 million people was also hit by an outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome in 2003 in which 299 people died.

“Hong Kong has the best H5N1 contingency plan to be found in any part of the world,” said Yuen Kwok-yung, chairman of infectious diseases at the University of Hong Kong’s department of microbiology. “We should not panic. Every winter there is increased H5N1 activity in poultry and migratory birds.”

In 1997, the government ordered all poultry in Hong Kong to be culled. Many families in rural areas kept chickens in back- yard wood-and-wire hutches that can still be seen lying empty and rusting in villages across the territory. Ducks, geese and pigeons are also widely eaten in Hong Kong.

Death Toll

Avian flu is a serious public health concern with the potential to cause a deadly pandemic, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says. Since 2003, more than 500 people have been infected with the H5N1 strain worldwide and about 60 percent have died, according to the Atlanta-based agency.

Public hospitals in the city activated their “serious” response level and enhanced surveillance after the government discovered the H5N1-infected chicken carcass in Cheung Sha Wan Temporary Wholesale Poultry Market, in the western part of Kowloon. The market was declared an infected area, Secretary for Food and Health York Chow said in a statement yesterday. He said it wasn’t clear whether the chicken was local or imported.

A total of 15,569 chickens, 1,122 silky fowl, 1,950 pheasants and 810 pigeons were destroyed at the market, according to the statement. The market will be closed until Jan. 12. No live ducks or geese are sold in Hong Kong, said Sally Kong, a government spokeswoman. Chow said the government will pay compensation of HK$30 for each chicken destroyed.

The Department of Health is testing workers at the market, farmers and other people who may have come into contact with the birds, according to a separate statement yesterday. So far no human H5N1 infections have been discovered, it said.

Mexican Wave

During the 2009 swine flu scare, Hong Kong quarantined almost 400 people in a downtown hotel who may have come into contact with a Mexican visitor confirmed as having the caught the flu strain.

The ban on live poultry came a day before the winter solstice, when many Chinese families hold a traditional feast that includes chicken dishes.

“It is unfortunate that an avian influenza case is detected before the winter solstice,” Chow said. “I understand that it will cause inconvenience to the public,” he said. “However, to safeguard public health, we need to adopt decisive and effective measures to prevent and control the spread of the virus.”

correct, they will try to exit now.

I saw a good analysis done few days before. it mentioned that the disaster it faced this year will not be repeated, i think due to flood. This is the risk with these shares, now we have another issue. I am sure his analysis didn't consider an outbreak like this. There is some drawback every year.

Epidemics like Bird Flu is again like a knee-jerk reaction to this industry's growth.. Every year small farmers get burn but large poultry houses can live with it due to better controls..

In my view; products come from BFL, GRAN ,TAFL is more responsive to these epidemics thru their better vaccination controls and quality standers..

since this news is out, still there be negative factors whether or not if affects SL..

So think better u leap..
