The government has turned down India’s offer to develop the Palali airport and instead decided to handle it under the Ministry of Civil Aviation, it is reported.

After the war was over, India undertook several projects in the North and among them was the development of the Kankesanthurai harbour. India in addition came forward to modernize the Palali airport, but the agreement was not signed.

However, it is learnt that the government has decided to implement the northern airport project without going in for a joint venture with India.

Asked about this matter, Civil Aviation Minister Priyankara Jayaratne said his Ministry would undertake the project to expand the airport to be operated for commercial activities and for the use of the Air Force.

“We are planning to operate the airport jointly with the Air Force,” he said.

The Minister also said ten domestic airports would be constructed in the country with the Ratmalana airport being expanded as the largest base for internal flights. He asserted that the government had only proposed a domestic airport in Kandy despite some people mistaking it for a third international airport.

“We have two international airports. One is the Katunayake airport while the second is being constructed in Mattala, Hambantota. It is only a domestic airport proposed in Kandy,” he said.

The Minister said the lands of the School of Agriculture in Kundasale and the adjoining seed farm would not be compromised for this airport.

“We have identified four lands for it. After the environmental impact assessment, we will select the most suitable one. We will not compromise agricultural activities for it. Some people cry to create unnecessary problems saying that the School of Agriculture will be relocated in view of the proposed airport project,” he said.

In the 2012 budget, Rs.750 million was allocated for the project. (Kelum Bandara)

Its a very good move!

Hats off to the present Sri Lankan Government for not bending to the regional super powers. India should not be given strategic assets of Sri Lanka. It was a mistake to give them the Trincomalee Oil Tanks and Oil exploration fields north of Mannar. India has not done any genuine thing to help develop Sri Lankan economy unlike China but merely holding these strategic military assets for their future & self advantage.

What happened to oil & Gas found in exploration field, Why are they waiting until 2013 to start exploration? Was these blocks were taken with genuine intention of exploration or with the ulterior motives of holding Sri Lanka's strategic sea boundaries close to India to prevent enemies from reaching their shores??

Look at Indian investment in Sri Lankan stock market!! LIOC, Appllo Hospital (before takeover), Watawala Plantations, Taj Samudra Hotel! They have all played out the innocent Sri Lankan investors and taken all the profits to India. Remember what happened to Palm Oil Industry, when Indian Government realized how Sri Lanka is benefiting from the duty waiver under the FTA, they immediately changed their import tariff structure and killed the industry in Sri Lanka. India should be ashamed of its treatment to Sri Lanka.

India should be thankful for Sri Lankan for Sri Lankan for using their Crappy Bajaj, three wheelers which had become a menace for Sri Lanka traffic causing government to expand its road network prematuarely!

If India genuinely wants to develop Sri Lanka, they could develop East and Uva Maskeliya and tea plantation areas where there re millions of south indian tamils live. Why only North? Why only strategic military assets of Sri Lanka?

It is also shocking to hear that some Indian companies are slowly but surely trying to tap in to the water resources of Sri Lanka by purporting to manufacture fruit and other drinks in Sri Lanka. India is facing acute shortage of quality drinking water and selfishly trying to use limited resources available in Sri Lanka for their advantage at the expense of future generations of Sri Lankan children.

First this shameless Indian government should complete and hand over the 50 000 houses they promised to the people who displaced due to War. After that they can talk about Tamil people's welfare, reconciliation and developing north and east and . If 3 rd class corrupted politicians like Karunanidhi really cares about Tamil people of Sri Lanka, he should urge the Indian government to complete the 50 000 houses and avoid robbing fisheries harvest belong to Sri Lanka's Tamils live in north and east.
