Jul 11, 2012 (LBT) - The market continued to drift lower with the ASPI losing 0.8% to end the trading session at 4868. Turnover declined to a low of LKR269 mn with the only significant trades being parcels of PC Pharma and PCH Holdings accounting for 57% of the day’s total. Losers outpaced winners with Equity One, Ceylon Leather(W0013) and Metropolitan Resource declining by 19.6%, 16.0% and 15.2% and offsetting gains in Tangerine, Industrial Asphalts and Tea Smallholder which rose by 22.2%, 16.3% and 15.6% respectively. Meanwhile, Asian markets edged lower today following a decline on Wall Street and concerns about Italy's finances sparked fresh fears that the eurozone was struggling to tame its debt crisis.

While the domestic structural story appears largely intact combined with strong corporate earnings in selected counters, what the market appears to be currently lacking is a bout of momentum which should provide the necessary trigger to rerate the market to higher levels. Notwithstanding the rhetoric of some market commentators that the bourse will not deliver citing such reasons as the lack of trading opportunities, the dearth of market moving news and weak investor sentiment, we take a somewhat different view. Ours is based on the belief that the market will deliver provided that the right investment strategy is employed, a portfolio of quality stocks is carefully selected while most importantly maintaining a healthy medium to longer term investor horizon.

Turnover was boosted by late transactions on PC Pharma and PCH Holdings. The rest of the counters saw dull or very low activity. Turnover for the day stood at Rs. 269 million. Treasure yields closed up in today’s auction which might dampen future inflows into the market.
ASI lost 32.21 points (0.76%) to close at 4,868.39, MPI lost 16.11 points (0.37%) to close at 4,322.24 and the S&P index lost 18.01 points (0.64%) to close at 2,775.55.

Top contributors to turnover were PC Pharma with Rs. 103 million, PCH Holdings with Rs. 50.3 million and Commercial Bank non-voting with Rs. 13.3 million.

Swarnamahal Financial Services, PC House and Piramal Glass were the most actively traded counters. Eastern Merchants gained 7.84% to close at Rs. 11, Malwatte gained 5.88% to close at Rs. 3.60 and Blue Diamonds non-voting gained 5.88% to close at Rs. 1.80. On the other hand, notable losers for the day were Citizens Development Bank down by 11.76% to close at Rs. 30, Kotagala Plantations down by 8.93% to close at Rs. 52 and United Motors down by 4.41% to close at Rs. 65. Foreign participation for the day stood at 5% whilst net foreign inflow was Rs.6.3 million.
