The substandard diesel was imported by a black listed company with the approval of the former Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) Chairman, Minister of Petroleum Susil Premajayantha stated.

The blacklisted company was allegedly handed a fine following which it was given its license to continue importing oil to the country by the former CPC Chairman, the Minister further said.

He further stated that the vehicles that are experiencing engine malfunctions are related to the use of diesel imported by the blacklisted company.

The Minister added that tests will be conducted on the diesel samples upon which further action will be determined.

The Jathika Sewaka Sangamaya of the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation charges that the stock of diesel that is behind the ongoing controversy, was imported from a firm that had been previously banned.

Secretary of the Union Ananda Palitha charges that there has been fraud behind the process of the importing the stock of diesel.

The Jathika Sewaka Sangamaya of the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation stresses that action needs to be taken against the team that independently observed the process.

’We have to say that the independent monitoring team is involved in some kind of fraud. Why we say this is because this company has been removed from the registered list for violating regulations many years ago," Palitha pointed out.

"This firm has been fined millions for the losses and the blackmark created on the corporation. Last year, for some reason the firm had been given the opportunity to supply fuel and submit tenders."

When Newsfirst made inquiries from Minister of Petroleum Industries Susil Premajayantha about these allegations, he conceded that the company in question was in fact banned some time ago.

However, the Minister added that when fuel with a low level of Sulphur was required at the Keravalapitya Power Plant, it was only this particular company that came forward to meet their requirements.

According to the Minister, under these circumstances the former Chairman of the Petroleum Corporation allowed the company to supply fuel.

Meanwhile, Secretary of the Joint Front of the Railway Trade Unions Sampath Rajitha pointed that issues arose with regard to train operations on Wednesday as well, following concerns over the use of sub-standard fuel.

The Railway Trade Union charges that several train engines have encountered mechanical failures owing to the use of sub-standard fuel.

General Secretary of the All Ceylon Railway Employees' General Union Sumathipala Manawadu said that within Monday (July 30) alone, around 15 train engines were damaged as a result of using the sub-standard fuel.

He went onto point out that commuters are greatly inconvenienced by these failures.

Meanwhile, Railway General Manager B.A.T. Ariyaratne also noted that several trains had encountered mechanical failures on Monday.

He said that an investigation has commenced to ascertain whether the fuel used had caused these mechanical failures.

The Railway General Manager noted that fuel samples have already been sent to the Industrial Technology Institute.

He added that relevant parties have been instructed to use Lanka Super Diesel for train engines with effect from Tuesday (July 31).
