Thanks for the financials.

Going by the ratios, I would think that SEYB.X is a better deal at such expected trading price.

Please explain the meaning of PBV and how we take a decision based on the PBV values.

PBV = Price to Book value = Price of share divided by the book value as per last financials.

eg. Approx. PBV of few banks:

Comb.N : 2.93
Comb.X : 1.85
Samp: 2.53
HNB.N :2.98

PBV in the range of 1 - 3 is ok so far as other ratios such as non-performing loans, cost/income, ROE & ROA etc are good.

Most of the time, banks with a good brand name, better financials and ratios trade at a premium to industry averages.

At these kind of valuations, the real winner from the Union Bank Colombo (UBC) listing could be SAMP, which has 26 million shares in UBC valued at nil in its books.

[quote="cse.alpha"]At these kind of valuations, the real winner from the Union Bank Colombo (UBC) listing could be SAMP, which has 26 million shares in UBC valued at nil in its books.

During 2010, SAMP made fulll provision of 275.9Mn for the UB investment as per CBSL recommendation. (SAMP Ann. Report 2010: Page 221).

So SAMP can be expected to sell this as all or none parcel to some strategic investor towards 3rd /fth qtr of 2011 - if they are keen to sell this year itself.

26.338Mn shares at an indicative price of 40 can yield an approximate 1Bn to profitability.

Better to go for some SAMP now itself...... Laughing
