Oct 03, 2013 (LBO) - Sri Lanka stocks closed 0.16 percent higher with speculative interest continuing in troubled Touchwood and the rupee strengthened in intra-day trading, brokers and dealers said.

The benchmark Colombo All Share Price Index closed 9.18 points higher at 5,814.80, up 0.16 percent, provisional data showed, after reaching an intraday high of 5,822.72.

The S&PSL 20 closed 2.18 points lower at 3,220.71, down 0.07 percent.

Turnover was 840.78 million rupees down from 1.31 billion rupees the previous day with shares of 120 firms gaining against 65 losers.

Foreigners bought shares worth 351.28 million rupees, down from 486.36 million rupees the previous day, and sold shares worth 271.77 million rupees, against 403.12 million rupees the previous day.

Touchwood closed 30 cents higher at 4.50 rupees with over 29.47 million shares changing hands during the day.

Nestle Lanka closed 50 rupees higher at 1,950.00 rupees and Asiri Hospital closed 80 cents higher at 15.80 rupees.

CTC closed 4.00 rupees higher at 1,040.00 rupees and Singer Sri Lanka closed 4.30 rupees higher at 97.50 rupees.

Asian Hotels and Properties closed 1.10 rupees higher at 71.10 rupees.

Com Bank closed 20 cents higher at 118.70 rupees and Sampath Bank closed 50 cents higher at 171.50 rupees.

JKH closed 2.80 rupees lower at 213.80 rupees and featured in four crossings.

Sri Lanka Telecom closed 90 cents lower at 38.60 rupees and Cargills closed 5.00 rupees lower at 149.80 rupees.

CT Holdings closed 4.80 rupees lower at 145.00 rupees and Hemas Holdings closed 1.40 rupees lower at 31.60 rupees.

Blue Diamond (BLUE:X) closed 20 cents higher at 1.40 rupees and saw more than 19.6 million shares change hands and Blue Diamonds (BLUE:N) closed 80 cents higher at 3.90 rupees with more than 17.47 million shares traded.

The rupee was at 131.40/45 to the US dollar in the sport market late trading after hitting an intra-day high of 131.20 against the US dollar on export conversions and dollar sales by foreign banks, dealers said.

The rupee was stronger from the previous day's close of 131.45/50 against the greenback.

A liquid five year Treasury bond was trading at a yield of 11.65/68 percent, down from 11.68/72 percent the previous day. Dealers said foreign banks were seen buying Treasury bonds in the secondary market.

COLOMBO, Oct 3 (Reuters) - Sri Lankan stocks rose to a five-week high on Thursday as investors bought shares of large caps like Nestle Lanka PLC, while foreigners were net buyers for an eleventh straight session.

The main share index rose 0.16 percent, or 9.18 points, to close at 5,814.80, its highest since Aug. 30.

Shares in Nestle Lanka rose 2.63 percent to 1,950 rupees a share.

Foreign investors were net buyers of 79.5 million rupees ($604,800) worth of shares on Thursday, extending net foreign inflows over the past 11 sessions to 1.86 billion rupees.

Foreign inflows have touched 20.49 billion rupees so far this year.

The day's turnover was 840.7 million rupees, below this year's daily average of about 879 million rupees.

Indices point in opposite directions

The All Share Price Index on the Colombo bourse closed in the green though the S&P SL20 index was marginally down with JKH continuing to be the most traded stock with nearly 0.9 million shares crossed in four parcels at a price of Rs.211 and floor trades of nearly 0.3 million shares contributing Rs.54.1 million to turnover, brokers said.

The counter closed on the floor 70 cents down at Rs.215.90 trading between a low of Rs.209 and a high of Rs.216 with the share trading X rights/warrants from yesterday. The JKH block trades contributed Rs. 181.5 million to turnover.

The day’s turnover of Rs.840.8 million was down from the previous day’s Rs.1.3 billion, with the All Share Price Index up 9.18 points (0.16%) and S&P SL20 down 2.18 points (0.07%) with 127 gainers well ahead of 64 losers while 103 counters closed flat.

"The retail play on penny stock was very evident with Touchwood leading the pack contributing Rs.137 million, the top turnover on the floor, with nearly 29.5 million shares transacted. The counter closed 30 cents up at Rs.4.50 trading between Rs.4.30 and Rs.5.00," a broker said.

Blue Diamonds (voting) closing 80 cents up at Rs.3.90 on nearly 17.9 million shares contributing Rs.67.7 million to the day’s business volume and the non-voting share closing 30 cents up at Rs.1.50 on 19.6 million shares traded contributed Rs.20.2 million to turnover.

Other cheap shares that saw volume included Amana Takaful closing 10 cents up at Rs.1.80 on 6.2 million shares, Free Lanka Capital Holdings closing 20 cents up at Rs.2.60 on 3.5 million shares with PC Parma and PC House Holdings also demonstrated share volumes of over a million.

Sampath Bank continued to attract interest closing 50 cents down at Rs.171.50 on nearly 0.3 million shares while Commercial Bank (voting) which saw a single parcel of nearly 0.5 million crossed at Rs.120 contributed Rs.57.3 million turnover.

Dialog also saw over 4.8 million shares done closing flat at Rs.8.70 while Janashakthi Insurance with over 1.1 million shares transacted closed 10 cents down at Rs.13.10 and MTD Walkers closed Rs.1.30 up at Rs.28.50 on 0.4 million shares traded.

The Namal Acuity Unit Trust announced a dividend of 50 cents per unit XD from Oct. 10 with payment on Oct. 26.
