Colombo shares closed on a mixed note today, as benchmark price index gained 12.90 points (+0.22%) to close at 5,909.95 and S&P SL20 index marginally dipped by 2.35 points (-0.07%) to close at 3,254.99. Price advancements in Finlays Colombo by LKR 41.00 (15.83%, closed at LKR 300.00), Ceylon Guardian Investments by LKR 10.00 (5.26%, closed at LKR 200.00) and Ceylon Tobacco by LKR 34.80 (3.12%, closed at LKR 1,150.00) contributed positively to the market index while price depreciations in John Keells Holdings by LKR 4.00 (-1.83%, closed at LKR 215.00), Distilleries by LKR 2.00 (-1.07%, closed at LKR 185.00) and Nestle by LKR 5.10 (-0.26%, closed at 1,989.90) contributed negatively to the S&P index performance.

Market turnover was LKR 723mn. United Motors topped the turnover list with LKR 240mn underpinned by crossing of 2.24mn shares at a price of LKR 107.00. Touchwood investments with LKR 108mn and Ceylon Tobacco with LKR 40mn were next best contributors to the market turnover. Moreover, another three crossings were recorded in John Keells Holdings (0.17mn shares at LKR 219.50), Ceylon Tobacco (0.03mn shares at LKR 1,150.00) and Commercial Bank (0.21mn shares at LKR 118.00) resulting the total value of crossings to represent 46% of the market turnover.

Touchwood investment was the heavily traded stock for the session followed by Swarnamahal Financial Services and Central investments & Finance. Further, Softlogic Holdings and Union Chemicals announced interim dividends of LKR 0.155 per share and LKR 6.00 respectively.

Foreign participation was 26% with a net inflow of LKR 330mn. Foreign inflows were seen in counters such as United Motors (LKR 240mn), John Keells Holdings (LKR 37mn) and Ceylon Tobacco (LKR 33mn) whilst net outflows were seen in Amana Takaful (LKR 5mn).

Cash map was 59%

Oct 09, 2013 (LBT) - ASPI on a positive note: The benchmark index journeyed on a volatile note during early trading hours and denoted an upward trend during the latter trading hours where it reached an intra-day high of 5932.46 before closing  at 5909.95 (+12.9points). Gains recorded in Ceylon Tobacco Company (+2.91%), Dialog Axiata (+2.3%) and Sri Lanka Telecom (+1.53%) weighted positively on the index. However, the dip in John Keels Holdings (-1.78%) pulled the S&P SL20 index down to end with a dip of 1.41 points.

Crossings contributed 46% to the turnover: Renewed off board interest was seen in United Motors Lanka as 2.2mn shares changed hands at LKR107.0. John Keells Holdings and Ceylon Tobacco Company continued to attract off-board interest where the former recorded a single crossing of 171k shares at LKR219.5 and the latter crossed a single off board block of 30k shares at a 52 –week high price (off board) of LKR1150.0. On board interest on John Keells Holdings was minimal and the counter closed at LKR215.1 with a dip of 3.9points. Ceylon Tobacco Company witnessed some on board investor interest and ended at LKR 1147.6. Commercial Bank also added a block of 214k shares to the crossings board at LKR118.0 and the counter closed on board at LKR118.2 (+0.42%).

Notable activity on TWOD: Touchwood Investments continued to attract investor interest and topped the day’s turnover led by many mid-sized blocks, the largest being 824k shares and ended at LKR5.0 gaining 8.7%. Swarnamahal Financial Services gathered some investor interest and was among the top turnover slot backed by an on-board block of 1.5mn shares at LKR2.3 and closed with a 25% price gain. Richard Peiris and Company also depicted investor interest as 1.2 mn shares traded on board and the counter ended at LKR6.6.

Turnover led by retail activity: Retail investor interest was dominant during the day with heavy activity being observed on most retail favourite counters. Retail interest surrounded in Touchwood Investments, Swarnamahal Financial Services, Richard Peiris and Company, HVA Foods, Blue Diamonds Jewellery and Central Investments & Finance as it saw significant amount of trading.

Did anyone notice this.JKH 2000+ volumes traded from normal order book today.Lowest amount I can think of in recent history.very unusual.

The Colombo bourse closed yesterday with the indices pointing in opposite directions – the All Share up 12.90 points (0.22%) while S&P SL20 was marginally down 2.35 points (0.07%) on a turnover of Rs.723 million, up from the previous day’s Rs.490.3 million, with 121 gainers outpacing 86 losers while 100 counters closed flat.

Brokers said that the pattern of trading was much like the previous day with block trades in United Motors (over 2.2 million shares), Commercial Bank (voting) slightly over 0.2 million shares, JKH nearly 0.2 million shares and CTC 29,553 shares accounting for Rs.335.9 million to the day’s business volume.

"Apart from the block trades, penny stocks continued to be traded vigorously with Touchwood seeing 22 million shares transacted, Swarnamahal 8.3 million, Richard Pieris 2 million, Nation Lanka nearly 1.4 million, Galadari nearly 0.9 million, HVA Foods nearly 0.9 million, Sierra over 4.2 million and Blue Diamonds (voting) nearly 2.6 million shares done," a broker said.

``The indices ended on a mixed note amid higher turnover levels stemming from retail interest in TWOD and crossings on UML, JKH, CTC and COMB," John Keels Stock Brokers said in their market report.

There was a net foreign inflow of Rs. 329.56 mn. With purchases of Rs. 349.86 mn. and sales of just Rs. 20.3 mn.

Nearly all the cheaper stocks other than Richard Pieris which was down 10 cents to close at Rs.6.50 and Janashakthi which lost 10 cents to close at Rs.14 posted price gains.

JKH was very thinly traded on the floor, closing four rupees down at Rs. 215.10 on just 3,121 shares traded.

United Motors saw a crossing of over 2.2 million shares at Rs.107 generating the day’s top turnover of Rs.239.1 million while ComBank saw 0.2 million shares crossed at Rs.118, JKH nearly 0.2 million shares crossed at Rs.219.50 and CTC 29,553 shares crossed at Rs.1,150 per share.

On the floor Touchwood was the most traded stock closing 40 cents up at Rs.5 on over 22 million shares done between Rs.4.70 and Rs.35.10 contributing Rs.108.4 million to turnover.

Analysts noted that this share had posted a one-year low of 90 cents and high of Rs.22.

Senkadagala closed 50 cents up at Rs.2.50, Nation Lanka 10 cents up at Rs.7.90, Galadari up at Rs.12.60, HVA Foods up at Rs.11.90, and Sierra up 20 cents at Rs.2.20 and Blue Diamonds 20 cents up at Rs.3.50.

Dialog too saw over 0.8 million shares done closing 20 cents up at Rs.8.90 trading between Rs.8.70 and Rs.9 and contributing Rs.7.5 million to turnover.

Softlogic Holdings announced an interim dividend of Rs.0.155 per share for 2013/14 XD from Oct. 22 and with payment on Oct. 31 while Union Chemicals announced a first interim dividend of Rs.6 per share for 2013 XD from Oct. 22 and with payment on Oct. 31.
