Sirisena said that Rs. 2 billion had been paid to a nonexistent Chinse company in 2012 as an advance payment for the tower which, to date, remains unaccounted for.
At 350m in height, the Lotus Tower is considered the tallest tower in South Asia and was built at a cost of USD 104.3 million, about 80% of which was funded by the Government of China.
Taking to Twitter, former Central Bank Deputy Governor W. A. Wijewardena suggested that the project may be a white elephant built at a staggering cost.
