He said it is very difficult to be competitive when the country has to import materials for ship building due to the cost factor.
The Colombo Dockyard Ltd has contributed immensely to the development programme of the country over the last few years by building the crafts for foreign markets and the Sri Lanka Navy.
He said the performance of Colombo Dockyard Ltd today is satisfactory but it could be developed further.
Sri Lanka is at the top in South Asia with regards to ship repairs and China is Sri Lanka's competitor in terms of price because of the cost of raw material. However, Colombo Dockyards offers much higher technological capability .and deliver quality products on time and with great value for money.
He said Colombo Dockyards, has been able to make a lasting impression because of its quality products and on-time delivery.
Elaborating on the importance of Human Resource Management at work place he said it is necessary to ensure the safety of the staff while that they are happy and fit to work.
He said it is important to see that employees are looked after well not only from the welfare side and also by appreciating the work performance in numerous ways. The President of Institute of Supply and Materials Management (ISMM) Danesha Perera addressing the gathering elaborated on the importance of the knowledge and the education on the related areas of work.
