The WHO's cancer research unit now classifies processed meat as "carcinogenic to humans" based on evidence from hundreds of studies, and linked it specifically to colon, or colorectal, cancer.
The news is a potential blow for red meat industry.....how will this news impact the poultry industry....guys what do u think ? Chicken/egg demand going to increase ?

You have highlighted a good point. Still it is too early to come to conclusion. However, if health analysts prove that read meat is bad for heath, then there will more demand for poultry and egg over read meat. Still there are people they will continuously eat red meat. Every meat has some sort of market share globally. Poultry will have more growth over other meat in the coming decade.

According to some we should not eat too much read meat. There will be less arable land in the future. How can feed human and animal alike in the coming decade?  Red meat producers need lot of animal feed. In the case of poultry, they need less feed. Growth for poultry sector has more than other meat in the coming decade. Just like human, animal also need good weather. There will be shortage in poultry products time to time due to bad weather such as heat. We saw millions of   animals (chickens) were dying due to heat in countries such as India. Even in Malaysia chicken industry has affected from haze.

There were reports that the haze in Malaysia is affecting business at farms that rear poultry and produce vegetables as chickens die by the millions in a month and farm produce dwindle, with consumers set to be the biggest losers.

Don’t forget increased population in Asian and pacific region.  More mouths in the future means more demand for all type of food.

Finally eating all type of food in moderation can be considered as safe eating. We cannot force vegetarians and vegans to eat meat and egg. I don’t see any health issues in those who are very active and productive people in their life. In addition, over production in food will create other issues globally.

Globally there was some support (demand) for chicken stocks during last two days. Today they are outperforming other meat stocks and their share prices appreciated accordingly. On the other hand, after WHO report, other read meat related stocks had some selloff yesterday and they recovered somewhat today.

In a roaring bull market all types of stocks will go up. As I said before, during final stages of current bull market there will be more demand for defensive stocks such as food stocks. GRAN is one of the stocks to keep under our radar now. Do not rush to buy and sell stocks in bull markets. I think some panicked and rushed and sold when it was trading around Rs.87. Some replaced it with BFL thinking to make profit after quarterly results. Behavior and personality of BFL is different from other two this time. GRAN is also one of the strong break out stocks in the market.

What is the more important? It is future earnings. More than stock prices, future earnings are more important for all types of value investors. They are looking for long term shareholder value creation.

Some of the things to consider when analyzing this sector?

Grain prices
Other raw materials prices including oil prices
Consumer preferences
Population growth
Demand for poultry products locally as well regionally
Income level
Other factors such tourism boom and new development

Pull back, volatility and sell off create great opportunity in bull markets. For example those who took advantage of sell off in August and September have become great winners in global markets now.

Thank you VP for the detailed info.

I guess due the the WHO warning of the health issues over the red meat & processed meat, poultry industry will boom in the coming years due to ever growing demand ....

Dear chamil1,
BFL's report is BEST... Reports of GRAN & TAFL may be GOOD... so... in this situation, They must go up... but, they react in the reverse way....  what's going on...?  The Market Players have sold out their poultry stocks in the last Rally Period... now they grab them for next RALLY.... if the Report will be Good , Poultry 3 may be go up!
If we are Short/Long term Investors, why do we worry about like these small small Market sentiments...?

Peacock,

You have written something else now. Earlier you have mentioned prices will go up before the reports. Now writing after the reports.

These are good stocks. And these needs their time for accumulation, running, corrections , etc.

BFL has an issue with a big player selling around Rs 225-230 levels onwards.

Is it EPF behind the sell off , being the hurdle for movement of the value shares such as BFL, GRAN, ACL, HDFC, RCL ,etc....??

Rather than finding HNWI for striking a deal....dumping to the small retail investors and bringing the CSE boredom......

The Central Bank of Norway (Norges Bank) which operates the largest sovereign wealth fund in the world, has begun investing in equities in the Colombo Stock Exchange. Norges Bank acquired 7.52 million shares, representing 1.14 percent of the shareholding in Textured Jersey Lanka PLC (TJL) over the past quarter, according to TJL’s interim statements released last week. Unconfirmed market sources said Norges Bank bought shares in Hatton National Bank PLC (HNB) as well as several other companies in recent times. The world’s largest fund manager, Blackrock also has 0.66 percent share ownership in HNB, while Norges Bank has 9 percent ownership in Blackrock. Dr Naveen Gunawardane’s LYNEAR Wealth Management is believed to be acting as the agent for Norges Bank in Sri Lanka.

The market value of Norges Bank’s sovereign wealth fund is currently 7,297 billion Norwegian Krone or US$ 859.88 billion, while the value of total sovereign wealth funds in the world is said to be just over US$7.1 trillion. The only larger funds in the world are the pension funds in the US and Japan. Norway’s oil profits are diverted to the fund, and some of the fund’s returns are usually injected into the country’s budget. Its asset portfolio has been divided into equities comprising 59.7 percent of the investments, fixed income securities making up 37.3 percent and real estate bringing up the remaining 3 percent. -

Norway’s central bank, which manages the world’s biggest sovereign wealth fund, has started buying shares in Colombo listed companies.

Norges Bank has bought 7.5 million shares in knit fabric maker Textured Jersey Lanka, a media report said.

The fund started investing in Textured Jersey around September.

Norges Bank Investment Management has close to a trillion dollars invested in global assets, a fund built from the country’s oil revenues.

The fund is currently valued at 7.2 trillion Norwegian Kroner, or 835 billion dollars.

Out of the fund, 9.1 percent is invested in emerging markets such as China, Taiwan and India, an investment allocation down from 9.8 percent last year.

Norway’s Government Pension Fund Global tops a ranking of 53 sovereign wealth funds in 37 countries, a ranking that includes funds such as California’s CalPERS and Dutch ABP, although often not classified as sovereign wealth funds.

The mandate from Norway’s Ministry of Finance requires the fund to invest 60 percent of its capital in equities, 35-40 percent in fixed-income securities and up to 5 percent in real estate.

The quarterly report of the pension fund can be viewed here

So if EPF are selling at the current rate they are booking (187.94-94) 94 rupees per share loss and a total loss would be 490mn after holding the share for nearly five years. Is it necessary. If they could wait for another couple of quarterly they would be selling the lot above 200. So I doubt whether it is EPF who does the selling or else is it a credit clearance going on Question

Are you seriously weak on mathematics? How you can say EPF selling this with sufficient profit. Refer the EPF annual report for 2012. In there in page 235 you can see the cost of GRAN investment as Rs1,005,584,,993 and in the GRAN annual report for 2012 says EPF holds 5,350,549 shares. So what is the actual cost per share then? Who puts bogus posts here. Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

And also how can you say EPF selling this one. Can you share the EPF holding as of now. I have open a thread for that one as well and you can post there. Don't let me tell you ........... Twisted Evil

I am not talking about Bairaha here. Its GRAN cost/ share only. EPF has bought Bairaha only after 2012 but I can't find those details.
