The SLTB was established in 1958 as the Ceylon Transport Board by nationalizing the Private Bus Companies aiming at providing a best and efficient transport service to the public as the first nationalized service in the country by the late prime Minister S.W.R.D.Bandaranaike.
The period from 1970- 1975 was recorded as the golden era of SLTB. However, it deteriorated under the regime of the United National Party in 1977, through its decentralization by Act No.19 of 1978. The SLTB had 12,000 buses in 1978 and this number had been reduced to 4200 in 2005. Over 500 buses belonging to the SLTB were burnt during the Southern Terrorism period from 1988 to 1989.
Under President Mahinda Rajapaksa steps were taken to enhance the public transport service, and thousands of abandoned buses were repaired and 500 new buses were imported. Most of the buses were deployed in rural areas. Plans are afoot to increase the umber of buses up to 7000 by next year.
The Chairman of the SLTB Bandusena said that the daily income of the SLTB has increased to Rs. 44 million with the commitment of its employees to strengthen the SLTB’s services. (niz)http://news.lk/news/business/967-sltb-revenue-increases-to-rs-21-billion
