Jun13, 2012 (LBT) - United States has exempted Sri Lanka and six other nations from US economic sanctions, after those countries have significantly reduced their volume of crude oil purchases from Iran, following US sanctions on oil purchases from the Middle Eastern countries. Accordingly, along with Sri Lanka, India, Malaysia, Republic of Korea, South Africa, Turkey and Taiwan have been exempted from US economic sanctions. These countries join 11 other countries, the USA exempted from its economic sanctions in March after taking steps to reduce petroleum imports from Iran.
United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said, these sanctions were implemented to support the US efforts to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon and to encourage Iran to comply with its international obligation.
